MY SOFAER STORY

With over seven years of experience in global health management, community development, and health promotion, I have a particular focus on communicable diseases in low-resource clinical and non-clinical settings. My background includes work as a resident paediatrician/public health physician as well as, as a mentor and advocate for an array of Nigerian and global organizations.

After completing an International Masters in Public Health in 2015, I decided to accelerate my career with an MBA program. I desired to acquire skills to contribute new solutions to the intertwined health care, social and economic challenges faced by so many worldwide – especially in Africa – and turn them into opportunities. My motivation for choosing the Sofaer MBA was its international outlook, its fast-track nature and its focus on innovation and entrepreneurship, coupled with its presence in Tel Aviv – the world’s innovative hotspot.

While in the program, I had an incredible time studying with a variety of professionals from 17 other countries. And being the only African in my class, I seized the opportunity to learn from others’ perspectives and re-evaluate my own beliefs. At the same time, I used it as a unique platform to offer  my own unusual perspective about the people, the systems and the opportunities in Africa which I believe will be their future markets. Perhaps the best course in the program was the Delta – a business incubator class – where a team I led created an innovative solution for management and prevention of diabetes. This is a project which I am currently working on for commercialization.

As a Sofaer MBA student, I interned with the Pears Program for Global Innovation, providing assistance and insights to forward-looking Israeli start-ups interested in emerging markets. After that, I founded Hutzpa Ventures – a business development consulting firm that offers services to optimize healthcare and innovation in Africa. It provides innovative solutions to important healthcare challenges requiring clinical, public health and business perspectives. Already in its first year of establishment, Hutzpa has presence in five countries. I also co-founded the GreenRise Hub – Nigeria’s premier agricultural technology development and empowerment company which aims to create a platform that will empower agricultural technology start-ups and entrepreneurs in Nigeria and Africa at large.

My long-term goal is to take maximum advantage of Africa’s many growth opportunities in the years ahead and to actively nurture biotech initiatives and innovation and entrepreneurship in the continent.
